Grain Free African Samosas

Grain Free African Samosas

Sharing is caring!

I’ve always grown up surrounded by some really incredible cooks in my life. My mom, of course, is a wonderful cook and taught me all I know and how to love cooking. But both my best friends growing up had moms who knew how to cook, and how to do it well! This recipe for grain free African samosas is a modification of a recipe introduced to our family through my best friend! They spent two years in Kenya as missionaries before we met them and came back with a plethora of amazing recipes!

Traditionally, samosas are wrapped in a flour based dough shaped into triangles. My mom started wrapping them in egg roll wrappers several years ago to save time and this recipe uses Siete Foods Cassava tortillas instead. Soon, I’ll try recreating the traditional dough with Cassava flour but in the meantime, the Siete tortillas worked really well! They also cut down on prep time so this ended up being a 30 minute meal! Score!

The filling for samosas is actually Paleo and Whole30 approved all by itself. It’s just ground turkey, potatoes, onions, and spices with a handful of raisins thrown in to give it a punch of sweetness. We like the filling plain too and usually make extra to eat by itself. You could also throw in some shredded cabbage to create an African version of egg roll-in-a-bowl! Makes for a great lunch!

In Africa, samosas are popular as a snack and people carry them around while they are out and about. I do the same thing. Since they’re fried, they don’t heat up well in the microwave but I like them room temperature and they’re easy to throw in a lunchbox. You could also reheat them in the oven or toaster oven if you’d like. That works out better than popping them in the microwave.  Throw a salad together and you’ve got a great work week lunch!
