Paleo Chocolate Cinnamon Scones

Sometimes, I think I was born on the wrong continent. I would love to be British, because who doesn’t love a high tea? Every time we visit Disney World, we always participate in the Grand Floridian’s high tea. High tea was also one of the first things I booked when we traveled to the United Kingdom a couple of years ago! More specifically, I look forward to scones. Scones are the best part of high tea, am I right? And you’re Paleo, gluten-free, and/or dairy free, you can still enjoy scones with this recipe for Paleo Chocolate Cinnamon Scones.

There’s nothing better than a warm scone slathered in clotted cream. It’s my favorite part of teatime. A couple of weeks ago, I was just consumed with the desire for a scone. I immediately set out to create a Paleo version that I could eat. These are perfect for breakfast too! And I think they have a similar flavor to Panera Bread’s cinnamon chip scones. These scones are more closely related to the British version of a scone than an American. American scones are lighter and much sweeter. Because it’s not American if it’s not pumped full of extra sugar, right? Why do we do that? Sometimes I think we must have deadened our taste buds and keep heaping more and more sugar into everything because we can’t taste it! It’s crazy. Do a sugar detox (like the 21-day sugar detox or a Whole30) and you’ll quickly realize just how much extra sugar we put in EVERYTHING! Like bread. Why do commercial breads have added sugar? You don’t put sugar in homemade bread, do you? Is it a preservative thing? Does added sugar extended the shelf life of products? But I ramble… back to the scones.

These Paleo Chocolate Cinnamon Scones are just heaven on earth right out of the oven. Warm and tender, they go perfect with a big dollop of coconut whipped cream! You can make coconut whipped cream yourself (I’ve never had great luck with it though) or you can buy it from Reddi-Whip or So Delicious. Whichever you prefer. Reddi-Whip also makes an almond milk whipped cream that’s delicious! I can find any of those products at my local Walmart. 

Paleo Chocolate Cinnamon Scones

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 20 minutes
Total Time 35 minutes
Servings 8

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup coconut flour
  • 1/4 cup cassava flour
  • 1/2 cup almond flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil melted
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/3 cup coconut milk
  • 1/3 cup chocolate chips optional

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Line baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper. 

  2. In a stand mixer, mix all dry ingredients (except chocolate) together.

  3. Add coconut oil, honey, and milk to dry ingredients. Stir to combine.

  4. Add eggs in, one at a time, until well incorporated.

  5. Add in chocolate chips last. Stir by hand until incorporated in.  

  6. Remove dough from bowl and place on sheet of parchment paper. Form dough into a disk with your hands. Wrap in parchment and place in freezer for 20 minutes. 

  7. Remove dough from freezer. Cut dough into 8 wedges (cut like you would a pizza). 

  8. Place scones on baking sheet and bake at 375 degrees for 18-20 minutes.

  9. Remove from oven and let cool. Top with coconut whipped cream and serve.
