Have you ever done a sugar detox? Or maybe you’ve tried the Whole30? I’ve done both the 21 day Sugar Detox and the Whole30 several times. I’m currently at the end of week one of another round of the sugar detox and man, has it been a challenge! I haven’t done a strict cleanse in over a year and the first 4 days put me down! Terrible headaches, exhaustion, and stomach pains were just some of the symptoms I experienced this week. I don’t think I’ve ever had such a strong reaction since my very first round of Whole30. Goes to show how far off track I went with my diet, right?

My body has righted itself now and I’m feeling much better. It’s day 6 and I slept hard and well the last couple of nights. My migraine disappeared as of this morning (thank goodness) and I feel a bit less foggy. By next week, I know I’ll be feeling so much better!

Going through a sugar detox

You might be wondering, why did I decide to start another sugar detox? Maybe you’re thinking of doing one too? Well, for me, I noticed a lot of symptoms I get when I have too much sugar in my diet. The fogginess, the cloudy vision, yeast infections, weight gain, the increase in migraines; I’ve experienced all of those in the last few months. My PCOS symptoms were returning including more sporadic menstrual cycles (I know, TMI. I’m sorry!), loss of hair at the top of my head, breakouts on my face. When I’m focused on my diet and work hard to keep refined sugar and carbs to a minimum, all of those symptoms disappear. I mean, completely. It’s shocking. I don’t follow a Keto diet, though I know it’s popular with others who have PCOS. I’m just not a fan. I think people take it too far and there is an extremist quality for many of those who follow the diet. Balance is key, in my belief, and I don’t believe Keto promotes that mentality. To each their own, though. It does work. I just don’t think it’s maintainable.

I’ve found I really like the 21 day Sugar Detox. It has roots in the Paleo diet, which I think is a solid diet, in terms of nutrition and balance. It’s easier for me than the Whole30, which doesn’t allow for baked goods or things like smoothies. Whole30 focuses more on eating things in their whole form, in their natural state. But I love my pancakes on weekend mornings and 21 day sugar detox allows for that! What’s something you have a hard time giving up?

Paleo Chicken Pad Thai

This recipe for Paleo Chicken Pad Thai is approved for all diets mentioned above, even Keto! It’s low carb, gluten free, refined sugar free, and super easy to throw together! I’m a big fan of Thai food and this recipe just hit the spot! If you aren’t doing a cleanse, try substituting the spaghetti squash for some sweet potato noodles, like THESE or shirataki noodles like THESE. The recipe would still be grain free and Paleo!
